Obtaining, Buying, & Drying

I finally found some eastern white pine boards that were the widths and lengths, as well as thickness we were looking to install for our kitchen floor Craig Rose Salem, NY. I found it har to believe that sSome of these are a full 19 inches wide and 16 feet long.

They were cut and air-dried then planed to 3/4 of an inch. I read that just air-dried is not dry enough to install. Evidently the consensus is that properly dried eastern white pine flooring should have a moisture content between 8-14%, with the subfloor and flooring differing by no more than 2%. We bought a moisture meter on Amazon.

We dried them for about a month, sitting in our living room to reach those numbers – a period of time to have to step around a pile this size. In our living room. In the dead of winter.

Lastly we gave it a bunch of coats of Tung Oil thinned with mineral spirits. The tung oil seeps into the wood and creates a matte finish which is water resistant. Tung Oil is a hard-drying wood oil that provides a lustrous and beautiful finish. It resists marring, penetrates well, and is environmentally friendly. Tung oil is FDA-approved for food contact, so we can finally eat off our floors.
